Actually, pre-sK encryption is really only needed for non-personal
files. For personal files, the convergent-encryption key is virtually
unassailable.
Quick example: the file "feist-1234.mp3" downloaded for Amazon MP3
has a known sha256 value, which anyone in possession of that file can
compute. So if I store this file to a public network, using the hash
value as the encryption key, anyone who has a copy of the file can
determine exactly what it is.
otoh, only I will be able to compute the sha256 hash of the file
"personal-musings-about-monkeys-and-guitars_AlenOct2007.txt", so if I
encrypt this file with that hash and upload it, it would be completely
opaque to all other users.
